Trip Introduction
Are you short on time and not necessarily pursuing anything adventurous or extreme, but still like to discover Nepal in its true authenticity and variety? Then, our Australian Camp Dhampus trek is the perfect escape for you, which has been designed as a short holiday to know what Nepal is and its people.
In addition to a little taste of a charming hike along the peaceful off-the-beaten trail of Annapurna and also one of the Gateways to Annapurna Base Camp, our Australian Camp Dhampus trek will also give you a cultural flavor of the unique Gurung people that still echoes the essence of the bygone era.
Our 2 days Australian Camp Dhampus trek will transport you from Pokhara to the tiny, very gorgeous village of Kande. From here, you will undertake a short yet steep climb to the Australian Camp, 2055 m, positioned on a hill that is also the centerpiece of our Australian Camp Dhampus trek.
The Australian Camp used to be called Thulo Kharka until the 1980s. It is a vast expanse of luscious grassland ideal for herders. Over time, groups of Austrian trekkers began to visit frequently, setting up their camps.
This led the locals to affectionately name the area the Australian Camp, as it was simpler to pronounce than Austria.
During your stay at the Australian Camp, you will have the remarkable chance to see the stunning orange hue of the settling and rising sun shading the snowy white faces of Lamjung Himal (6983 m), Machhapuchhre (6993 m), Hiunchuli (6440 m), and Annapurna South (7219 m).
Next, our short Australian Camp Dhampus trek will guide you down to the indigenous Gurung Village of Dhampus. This small village at 1750 m is famously known as the land of the Gurkhas, where many Gurungs have served in the British Gurkha Army.
From Dhampus, your Australian Camp Dhampus Trek will continue its descent towards Phedi, ultimately returning you to Pokhara.
Our Australian Dhampus trek will therefore only need you to walk for a few hours for two days only. But you will have adequate time to see the perfectly formed mountain panorama of the Annapurna.
Therefore, our trip is the perfect fusion of scenic beauty, cultural depth, and peaceful trails, making it ideal for those looking for excellent nature to make their short holiday experience memorable for a lifetime.
Even though our Australian Camp Dhampus trek lies in the very center of the very sought-after Annapurna, it still remains to be Annapurna’s best-kept secret, offering peace, tranquility, and breathtaking mountain views.
So are you ready to get the daily surprises, ever-evolving landscapes, and magnificent mountain vistas? If so, join our Australian Camp Dhampus trek today, which can be an excellent side trip to further complement your ongoing Nepal trip.

Accommodation in Pokhara
Since our 2 days Australian Camp Dhampus trek departs directly from Pokhara, we have thus not included accommodation in Pokhara for you.
Generally, this short Annapurna Camp Dhampus trek is taken by guests who are already spending their time in Pokhara. However, if you would like us to facilitate an overnight staying for you in Pokhara, we can certainly do so.
You can make your choice from a single room to deluxe options, and from three-star to five-star accommodations. Please tell us about your selection while contacting us for the trip, and we will make all essential arrangements for you.
Please understand that this service will cost you an extra fee based on your accommodation choices.
Best Season for the Australian Camp Dhampus Trek
In principle, you can engage in our Australian Camp Dhampus trek at any season and any month of the year. However, the specific rainy season occurring from June to early September can sometimes make the trek nearly impossible due to heavy rain and cloudy days.
Although we will only trek for two days in our short Australian Camp Dhampus trek, we will have to patiently wait for the dry window period if you would like to enjoy the monsoon trekking in Nepal.
Therefore, for the immense hiking Nepali experience, we would suggest the period between February and May, and again between mid-September and November.
These are the two dry seasons in Nepal, which are spring and autumn, when temperatures are agreeable, and you will face little difficulty with cloud. Therefore, you will have the clearest, most beautiful Himalayan panorama stretching before your eyes.
Another most serene time will occur between December and February when the temperature is not that frigid (since our trek is confined to 2000 m elevation). The days will radiate with brilliant sun, the skies will be decorated with deeper blue, and mornings and nights will be pleasantly chill.
Is 2 Days Australian Camp Dhampus Trek hard?
Our 2 days Australian Camp Dhampus trek is an easy level 1 nature trekking trip, with a maximum height confined to 2000 m elevation, thus posing no risk of altitude sickness.
With exceptionally short duration, our trekking route to the Australian camp features no steep trails, high passes, or extensive jungle and river crossings.
The walking hours are also limited within 5 hours along the well-made stone path characterized by gentle, charming jungle slopes. Additionally, the accommodation will also be quite comfortable with excellent utilities and food.
Thus, our Australian Camp Dhampus trek is the most comfortable, easiest, most affordable, and safest mountain adventure that you can complete in just two days in Annapurna.
Can everyone join our Short Australian Camp Dhampus Trek?
Certainly, our Australian Camp Dhampus trek welcomes people from all walks of life. You may be:
- A couple searching for a unique romantic heaven and a brief escape from the chaos of the city.
- A family with young kids wishing to have a small vacation that can be enjoyed by all.
- Busy professionals who are searching for short escapes from stress and a complete sense of liberation.
- Someone who likes to get to know Nepal and its people, and to take photographs and films.
- A traveler who neither has a lot of time nor is necessarily looking for extremes, but wants to get to know the country in all its diversity.
- An admirer of the radiant Himalayas of Nepal, wanting to see their beauty without getting very close and without engaging in multi-day hikes.
- A cultural enthusiast who wants to experience a unique culture and meet lively individuals.
All in all, our Australian Camp Dhampus trek is made for everyone belonging to very different fields of life. Even if you have mild or moderate health concerns, you can still join us as the route is easy and surrounded by nature, which will, in fact, uplift your well-being both physically and mentally.
Is there any concern of Altitude Sickness/AMS in our 2 Days Australian Camp Dhampus Trek?
Most of the travelers joining our Australian Camp Dhampus trek fear about altitude sickness, which is a condition related to the high altitude and is also known as Acute Mountain Sickness/AMS.
However, our short Australian Camp Dhampus trek is designed with not only a short duration and lower elevation but also with gradual ascent and descent before reaching the maximum point (Australian Camp at 2055 m).
Therefore, we will not have AMS on this trip, but some people may still feel slightly unwell once they are at or over 2000 m altitude. Generally, even if altitude sickness occurs, at this elevation, the symptoms are usually very mild, limited to initial minor signs such as headaches, nausea, and vomiting.
They will usually disappear on their own if you hydrate and rest for a few hours. You can take paracetamol, ibuprofen, or aspirin for headaches, or you may choose to avoid medication altogether and instead rely on soothing hot drinks like lemon and honey water.
We advise you to pay close attention to our guide’s advice. He will generally advise you to take the Diamox pill (a common anti-altitude medication) if you begin noticing the altitude symptoms.
Is any training necessary for our Australian Camp Dhampus Trek?
Our Australian Camp Dhampus trek is just two days long and consists of short trekking action, avoiding the typical high-altitude challenges of the Nepali mountains.
So, in this trip, you will not be doing anything overly strenuous, but you will see and experience a lot within these two days. The participants joining the Himalayan Adventure Treks are very diverse.
We have families with kids, sometimes several families coming together as a group, sometimes people aged 50 or 60. We have our oldest guest being over 80, and the youngest just at 4.
The trekking hours involved in our Australian Camp Dhampus Trek average only 4 hours each day. However, you won’t have the assistance of a porter to carry your luggage.
But you can get one for an additional fee, or you can also leave your luggage at your hotel in Pokhara.
So, our short Australian Camp Dhampus trek is an active trip, but it is not a high-altitude trek that is strenuous or overly challenging. Therefore, you should be an active person without a doubt, for which you can do simple, normal day-to-day routines such as walking, running, swimming, or cycling.
Consider expanding your Australian Camp Dhampus Trek
You wish to further excite your Australian Camp Dhampus trek, we got it. Just think of adding the Poon Hill trek, or the Ghandruk trek, or both to your short Australian Camp Dhampus trek adventure.
However, adding these two outstanding treks, your trek will lengthen from a day or two, or you can also make your itinerary more extensive. Not only your days, but also your altitude will increase, getting you over 3000 m at Poon Hill Lookout tower.
If you decide to expand your Australian Camp Dhampus trek with these two alternative adventures, then you will have to:
- Trek from Australian Camp to Pitam Deurali, which serves as a connecting location for various treks in Annapurna
- Trek from Pitam Deurali to Ghandruk, which is the larger and more authentic Gurung community
- Trek from Ghandruk to Poon Hill via Ghorepani, meeting the smiling Magar community
- Then connecting back to Pokhara via Nayapul/New Bridge
Adding these two marvelous options will slightly increase the hardness of the Australian Camp Dhampus trek from an easy nature to a moderate degree, but it will be very manageable and comfortable.
Sleeping, Eating, and Traveling Mode
During our 2 days Australian Camp Dhampus trek, we will provide you with a twin-sharing room in an accommodation at the Australian Camp for one night. You will stay at the local guesthouse, which you may commonly know as a tea house.
They will be well-equipped with a private bathroom and a Western-style toilet. For your shower, hot water is available for a small extra fee.
As for meals, you will be offered three meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner), excluding any beverages. Dal Bhat will be the staple diet, accompanied by momos and noodle dishes.
Additionally, the tea house may also offer you a Western-oriented menu such as pizza, pasta, and eggs. Please note that the entire Annapurna region prohibits bottled water, so the tea houses purify the water by boiling it, which you can easily refill along the route; it is completely safe.
Concerning your traveling arrangements, Himalayan Adventure Treks will be offering you its private pickup and drop-off services to your hotel in Pokhara to the starting and ending point of the trek.
Additionally, we will also ensure you have a private vehicle available for your journey from Pokhara to Kande and returning from Phedi to Pokhara, so you have enhanced convenience during our Australian Camp Dhampus trek.
Communication and WiFi/Internet
Cell phone providers like NCELL and Namaste in Nepal offer their outstanding service and coverage throughout the Annapurna region. Therefore, we advise you not to activate your roaming plan as it can be quite expensive.
Instead, buy a SIM CARD of any one of the Nepali cell providers, which is NCELL or NTC. You can also buy their eSIM Card easily online from their official websites.
Wi-Fi is also conveniently and widely available in Annapurna. In Pokhara, you can even get free Wi-Fi in every hotel, restaurant, and cafe, so don’t hesitate to ask for the Wi-Fi code. However, in Australian camps, you may need to pay a small fee to use the Wi-Fi at the tea house.
Travel Insurance
For our Australian Camp Dhampus trek, travel insurance isn’t such a mandatory element since our trip is pretty simple, short, that will last only two days at a mild altitude of up to 2000 m.
However, we do strongly suggest you protect yourself with standard international travel insurance for any trek or trip in Nepal. Your standard travel insurance should include cancellation coverage to safeguard your investment in case the trip is delayed, postponed, or canceled.
It will also cover your investment if you need to cancel your trip for any reason before it takes off. Additionally, it should provide coverage for luggage loss, theft, damage, and extra stay for your added protection.
Permits strictly needed for our Short Australian Camp Dhampus Trek
For our short Australian Camp Dhampus trek, there is a requirement of two fundamental permits, as for any trek and trips in the Annapurna region, which are:
- ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Permit) priced at NPR 3000 for each trekker allows unbarred trekking through the Annapurna reserve and also supports the community upliftment
- TIMS (Trekkers’ Information Management Service) permits are priced at NPR 2000 for each hiker to document their whereabouts and track their location for timely rescue service
The government entity responsible for issuing both permits is the Tourism Board of Nepal, situated in both Kathmandu and Pokhara. For this trip, Himalayan Adventure Treks will be managing them at your interest.
