“Travelling the road will tell you more about the road than google tell you about the road” Mount Kailash Manasarovar Yatra is known as the mother of all Teertha Sthal( Pilgrim Place). The holy Mount Kailash Yatra is considered to be one of the most difficult treks in Asia.Located in the far reaches of western Tibet, just north of Nepal and India, is one of the most sacred mountains in the world: Mt. Kailash, the most prominent diamond shaped symmetrical peak. It has an elevation of 6638 m (21178 ft) and is made up of black rock. It is one of the highest parts of the Himalayas and serves as a source of some of the longest rivers in Asia. It is also known as Gang Tise or Gang Rinpoche in Tibetan. For the last two thousand years, people have made pilgrimages from all over the Asian continent to see this mountain. To the Buddhists, Kailash is associated with a tantric meditational deity called Demchog and his consort Dorje Phamo. Demchog is a colorful figure with a lot of energy having four three eyed faces, blue elephant-like skin, twelve arms, and hands, wearing a crown of human skulls and a tiger skin cloth around his waist. His consort Dorje Phamo has red skin carries a curved knife and a skull cup. She is associated with a small peak next to Kailash called Tijuana. After lunch, we will continue our drive to Saga after crossing over two small high passes and the River Brahmaputra. The origin of the river is in Kailash and flows east to the Lhasa, Tsangpo George then drops down to Arunachal. It eventually merges in the bay of Bengal via Asham. This is the longest river of Asia.

We continue to drive to Dongba. The distance between Saga and Dongba is about 150 km and the drive takes about 2 hours.

Day 06: Dongba – Lake Manasarovar:

We will depart from Dongba in the early morning. Our next destination is the famous Lake Mansarovar. We will be taking the holy dip in the river. We will also perform Pooja (worship) in the lake. You need to pack your clothes and other necessary accessories accordingly.

We will drive along the banks of the River Brahmaputra for our journey. We will traverse through a couple of high passes with some wide pastures and sand dunes on both sides before we reach Paryang. Paryang is a small country. It has a regional base for Chinese military force. They have a couple of hotels and guesthouse arrangements for Indian pilgrims/tourists.

We will drive for another 2 hours until we reach the military barricade. After clearing out the security checks, we will stop for lunch break after around 15 minutes drive. Picnic lunch will be served.

We will drive over Mayum La pass (5200 m) after lunch. This is the highest pass we will be crossing on the vehicle. We will drive for another 2 hours to reach the Lake Mansarovar after driving through pastures, small lakes, and some Tibetan villages.

The Chinese government has been operating pollution free vehicles in this region. Hence, we need to swap the vehicles. It will take around half an hour to purchase tickets and swap the vehicles. We will take the drive around the Lake Mansarovar for around 1 hour. If time and weather conditions permit, we will also take the holy dip and perform pooja over here.

Day 07: Lake Manasarovar to Darchen:

From Lake Mansarovar, it takes only 45 minutes to reach Darchen, the foothill of mount Kailash. We leave from Lake Mansarovar late after breakfast. We will take an uphill trek to Chiu Gompa Monastery. This will help in developing stamina into the body if you are willing to take parikrama (trekking around Mt. Kailash).

Darchen is the administrative headquarter of the local area and the main base of mount Kailash. Generally, tourists/local devotees/Indian pilgrims stay overnight here and commence their further journey around Mount Kailash the next day. The Chinese government has established Police and Military posts here to check all travel documents.

Darchen has more options for hotels and guesthouses. If you are looking forward to the trekking, you should manage everything, from horses, porters, and yaks from here.

Day 08: Darchen to Tarboche then start Trekking:

Darchen is situated on the foothill of Mt. Kailash and is the gateway of trekking around Mt. Kailash. This is the start and the end point of the complete circumlocution of Mt. Kailash 52 km.

We will be ready to move to Tarboche (Yam Dwar) after breakfast. It takes around 25 minutes drive to reach there. It is an ideal point to enjoy closed and stunning views of the south and west faces of Mt. Kailash.

Tarboche is the gathering point of horses, yaks, and porters for trekking. Trekkers move ahead to Deraphuk from here and the non-trekkers return to Darchen from here. It takes around 3 days to complete the trek.

The entire trail up to Deraphuk is reasonably flat with gentle ascend. However, you may feel extreme exhaustion because of its extreme elevation. You might need to have broken on the way very frequently. The last legs of the journey are tough with rapid ascend. But, it is only for half an hour.

Deraphuk stands at an elevation of 4920 m. The north face of Mount Kailash is just a few thousands of meters away from here. This is the only place to have a close view of the north face.

Day 09: Deraphuk to zutul phuk:

This day is the toughest and the longest journey of this entire trip. We have to trek almost 22 km through rugged Highland to reach Zutulphuk. We have to literally start our day early today. We need pack up our gear and set off from the hotel at 5 a.m. Chinese time.

Initially, from Deraphuk it is an uphill trek. After walking for about an hour or so, the trail turns into mild ascend. Half of the trail passes through an elevation of 4900 m./16,000 ft. or above. So, altitude sicknesses like a headache or breathlessness are normal. However, it is advised to keep your pace slow & steady.

It is also advised to carry basic stuff, like the water bottle, down jacket, raincoat and some dry fruits and chocolates. You need to be self-dependent in basic things while trekking this way.

You will reach a high pass after you make an uphill trek for about around 4 hours. You will find Tibetan prayers flags fluttering. This is ‘Dolma La pass’ (5800 m.) and this is the highest point that we will be crossing over during this divine trip.

We will find our self near a tiny glacial lake after making a gentle descend from the pass. This is ‘Gauri Kunda’.

From Gauri Kunda, the trail leads us rapidly down through the area full of boulders and loose pebbles. It is tougher and painful to go down than come up. Even horses cannot be used in this trial. It takes an hour or a half long trekking down from Gauri Kunda to eventually reach the valley floor. The trail is easy & flat from this point. It is another 2 hours easy-walk to reach Zutulphuk from here.

DAY 10: Zutul phuk to Darchen( Repeat)

We pack up our gears in the morning after breakfast and move on to Darchen. It is an easy and flat trail. It takes about 3 hours to complete.

Day 11: Nandi Parikarama:

We start Nandi parikrama early morning at 4:00 AM. We will visit Sapta Rishi cave, Atmalingam & will touch Mt. Kailash (Charan Sparsh) & head back to Darchen which will take around 8-9 hours.

Overnight in Guesthouse at Darchen.

Day 12: Trek to Diraphuk:

– Yama Dwar – Dhirapuk (10 km): 5 – 6-hour trek.

– Height: 4920 m./16,138 fits

Day 13: Inner Parikrama:

We will depart for Inner Parikrama after an early morning breakfast. The trail starts ascending rapidly right from the beginning. We will leave the main route and head out right through the tiny ravine. From this point onwards, we follow the off route.

We will reach the semi vertical ice wall, which is almost 50 meters higher after trekking for a while in glaciers (3 km). We have to fix the rope here and climb up together. For safety reasons, we have to fix the rope. After climbing, we visit Kuber kunda and East face of Mt. Kailash and then trek down to Zutul phuk.

Day 14: Zutul phuk to Dongba:

It is the last day of this divine circumambulation. The morning after breakfast, we pack up our gear and move on to Darchen. The entire trail is easy and flat. The trek takes about 3 hours to complete.

Our Vehicle will be waiting for us at the final point, before Darchen. We board on the Bus and start our journey to further destination. First, we reach to the Eastern shore of Manasarovar where we had left our vehicle. We board on the same vehicle and move ahead.

We will traverse the same route back through Mayum La pass, military barricade, Paryang country, sand-dunes area then eventually get too old Dzongba in the evening. Picnic lunch will be served.

Day 15: Dongba to Nyalam:

After breakfast in the morning, we pack up our belongings and finally set off for Nyalam. Today, we will be traveling approximately 450 km through the dry plateau to reach Nyalam. On the way, we drive through Saga, cross over the bridge of river Brahmaputra then drive towards Peiku lake then eventually get to Nyalam.
